Kudos to the urbanist Richard Florida. In his article entitled How The Crash Will Reshape America (Atlantic-March 2009) he is “spot on” in his observations regarding how our current economic downturn is reshaping America. I particularly liked his bold assertion that homeownership should be removed from its pedestal as the symbol of a vibrant economy. He is correct in proposing that our government should use tax incentives to encourage renting, not buying.  Let’s face it, most American’s don’t own their house anyway–their mortgage lender does. As I see it, renting versus buying would allow Americans greater geographic flexibility, mobility, and work options in today’s rapidly evolving economy.
